Blogging has taken a back-seat these past couple weeks due to the craziness of life. Hopefully when things slow down I'll be more dedicated to regular postings. In the mean time.. here are a few random thoughts.

1. Did you tune in to the two episodes of Oprah's favorite things? Of course it would've been AMAZING to receive all those free goodies (especially the iPad and the VW!), but did anyone else think the audience's reaction was a little over the top?

2. Thanks to Jessica at What I Wore, I think I've finally found the perfect work bag with plenty of room for my clunky work laptop, planner, files and other random travel essentials.

3. This little twig tree is absolutely charming. Since I wont be in town long enough to enjoy a real tree, and just dont feel like investing in a fake one, I do believe this is the perfect solution.

4. Anyone else a fan of Banner Banter? Their products are too cute and I can't wait for my "La Dolce Vita" banner to come in the mail.

SCAD + WE

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending a lovely event at West Elm (my all-time favorite store for furniture and home decor).

The evening consisted of cocktails and appetizers amongst a very chic crowd and a showcase of art by Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students, faculty and alumni. Unfortunately I didn't see as much of the local artists' work as I would've liked. I did, however, take advantage of the 20% discount offered to guests who attended the event and might've gone a bit overboard...

I bought a yellow lacquer nut bowl to add a some color into my apartment that consists mainly of white and neutrals.

After eyeing the Manzanita sconce for a few weeks, I finally took the plunge and bought a pair. I have no clue where I'll hang them, but what I do know is that I love them and they will look gorgeous wherever they end up.

I plan on using a lot of metallics in my holiday decorating this year and these mercury votive holders will work perfectly for what I have in mind.

So random, but so cute. Anything with owls is a winner in my book.

I currently own no dishes other than boring, white, everyday stuff. So, I decided these were necessary to dress up an otherwise blah table setting.

And last, but not least, yet another yellow purchase. This Studded-Bloom Pillow was just too pretty to pass up.

So I didn't get as much Christmas shopping done as I'd like (although I bought a few cards - that counts for something right?). But, now that I got a little West Elm shopping out of my system, I will be focusing on holiday gifts for others and looking forward to scouting out the perfect presents.

Eternally Cozy

Thick, chunky eternity scarves seem to be all over the place this year and after spotting some cute versions at ModCloth, Anthropologie, and Urban Outfitters, I decided to put my knitting skills to use and make my own.

I held two strands of worsted weight yarn together and knit in seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1 with odd number of stitches) on size 19 needles. Once the scarf was approximately 70" long, it was bound off, and ends were sewn together.

And there you have it! A quick (thanks to the huge needles) and easy scarf to throw on with a blazer or when bundling up for chilly weather.

Well I'm finally back in the states after a long week in Canada and currently in Maryland where I have more work obligations until Friday. Although I'm ready to be back in Atlanta, I'm thrilled that I got to spend the weekend at my parent's house where we celebrated my Mom's Birthday and enjoyed some quality family time.

During the weekend, I was down in the basement and came across some old pictures. It's always fun seeing photographs of great granparents, distant relatives and portraits taken long ago. I chose my favorites and plan to incorporate them into a gallery wall which I hope to compile sooner rather than later.

I've been traveling for work the past few days, and it's already been a long week (although I realize it's not even halfway over.. ughh). We left Atlanta at 7:30 am Monday morning, spent less than 24 hours in Ottawa, then boarded another early morning flight today for Halifax where we had a full day of work and dinner with coworkers.

Needless to say, after the craziness of these past two days with very little sleep, I'm beyond exhausted. Finally, a full night of sleep without a 4:00 am wakeup call (although 5:30 isn't much better)! Anyway, that's what I'm up to this week... just a quick update.

Knitting: Not Just For Grandmas

Knitting has been a hobby of mine since I was about 10 years old. I'm really not sure why I was so fascinated with this old-fashion craft, but one day I decided to check out a book from the library, buy some needles and cheap acrylic yarn, and teach myself to knit. (Looking back I realize how not normal this was...I guess I was a rather odd kid). After several hours of trial and error, along with a bit of help from some neighbors, I eventually figured it out.

Now, 14 years later, I'm still knitting (but with better yarn). I rarely do large projects, and instead stick to small, quick patterns that I wont get bored with. Here are a few of my favorites over the past few years.

Plus, there's nothing better than receiving a compliment and telling someone you made it yourself!

Textured Tights

I recently came to the harsh realization that although temperatures have been reaching the mid 70's here in Georgia, Fall is in full swing, my tan has faded, and it's officially time to pull out the tights and cover my pale legs.

Typically I play it safe with dark, opaque hosiery (I absolutely love these by Spanx), but this year it will be fun to experiment with textured tights (and possibly color) to liven up pencil skirts and work dresses.

Prime Time

I recently decided it was time to change foundations. Typcially I use Loreal True Match, but began to realize that after several hours my face would get oily (particularly in the T-Zone) and my skin no longer looked smooth and even. So, off I went to Sephora where I learned that the problem wasn't necessarily my foundation, but what I used before applying my makeup each morning. Apparently, the only solution to long lasting foundation is to use a primer. Seeing as how I'm already rather high maintenance and depend on several products on a daily basis (read about my 3 favorite mascaras here), the idea of adding another step to my already extensive makeup routine wasn't what I wanted to hear. I ended up purchasing some lovely Laura Mercier foundation and chose not to buy the primer (mainly out of principle).

However, the helpful sales associate gave me a one week sample of the Laura Mercier Primer to try out. And you know what? This stuff is amazing! I'm offically hooked.

When applied after moisturizer has soaked in and prior to applying foundation, my face looks great even after a long 10 hour work day. I was skeptical at first, but now realize this product is essential to maintain fresh looking makeup throughout the day.

It’s homecoming at my Alma Mater which means a weekend filled with football, drinking and reconnecting with old friends. The festivities began last night as a close friend arrived in town from D.C. After a lovely dinner with girlfriends, we proceeded to our old favorite college bar which seems to get dirtier and smellier with each passing year. I’m feeling less than stellar at work today and needless to say, will not be partying like a college kid on a Thursday night again in the near future.

And while the idea of alcohol makes me cringe at the moment, I can’t help but love everything about these bar carts. There’s something so cool about a little stocked cart perfectly styled with all the essentials for a cocktail.

I'm back from Ohio and so very happy to be home! The weekend away was good, but it's always nice to be back to your own bed :)

We spent the past few days visiting with my BF's family and attending the annual Swiss Festival held in the small town of Sugarcreek. Along with a parade (pictured above) and carnival rides, there was also a cheese auction which was quite bizarre. A 50 lb. chunk of Swiss sold for $45 per pound. (I don't know about you but I can think of about a milion better ways to spend that kind of money and I do love cheese....I'm from Wisconsin, a Cheese Head at heart). Goats dressed in Swiss clothes, the world's largest cuckoo clock, a three year old with a snake and Amish people galore were just a few more interesting sites we took in during our weekend in Sugarcreek.

Oh, and speaking of 50 lbs. we indulged in all kinds of insanely unhealthy foods (apple fritters, funnels cakes, gyros, french fries, candied apples and even fried Oreos... yikes) that have left me feeling gross and in desperate need of some exercise.

So, this week I will be detoxing from junk food, going on long runs, and enjoying this beautiful, not too-hot-or-too-cold, absolutely perfect, couldn't-ask-for-anything-better kind of weather. What are yall up to?

Packing Problems

I'm off to Ohio this afternoon for a couple days to visit to my BF's family. It will be a nice weekend in a rather rural part of the state. I'm definitely looking forward to relaxing and enjoying the peaceful country.

While preparing for this trip, I realized just how spastic I am when it comes to packing. Whether it's a low-key weekend with the family, or a girls trip to the beach, I always start the process by listing out what I'll wear each day. But for some reason when packing actually begins, I take hours contemplating each choice; constantly worrying I'll forget something important, yet never referring to my list.

And to make matters worse, it has become a personal goal of mine to always pack in a carry on whenever possible. Fine for two days, but 4 days worth of outfits is quite a challenge, especially when packing pants and sweaters.

Then add in shoes

and toilettries

And before you know it, you've got a suitcase filled to the very top. Regardless of my efforts to plan ahead and try to pack as minimally as possible, there is never ever a spare inch of space in my luggage.

Anyone else experience pre-travel stress due to packing issues?

DIY Satin Flowers

When I was younger, I loved crafts of all types. I considered myself an expert colorer and a friendship bracelet guru at a very young age. As I got older, I started rubber stamping (before scrapbooking was such a huge craze), learned to cross stitch (which was short-lived), beaded jewelry, made collages for friends, dabbled in paper making, taught myself to knit, and then learned to sew.

Other than the occasional knitting project, I hadn't been using my creativity a whole lot and realized I missed it. There is a sense of accomplishment that comes with making something pretty, so when I came across directions on one of my favorite blogs for making satin flowers, it seemed like the perfect project.

I happened to have both red and white satin on hand, so I experimented with the sizes and amount of layers and ended up with these.

I was surprised at how much fun it was to melt the edges over an open flame (slightly pyro behavior, I realize) and was pleased that the fabric worked so nicely.

There are so many things you could do with these lovely satin flowers. I sewed on a small pin and wore it on a white cardigan. You cold also add a magnet to liven up a boring refridgerator, glue one to a card and watercolor a stem, attach it to a hair clip (adorable when worn with a low messy bun), or frame in a box like this and add to a gallery wall.

This was such a fun, easy and cheap project and definitely helped to get the creative juices flowing once again. Hopefully I'll be crafting again soon and will be back to share!

It's officially the first weekend of Autumn! Of course the weather is still in the 90's here in the south, but I've got my fingers crossed that it will cool down in the coming weeks. I'm just too excited to start wearing cozy sweaters and scarves again.

Today I'm off to the Georgia Tech vs. North Carolina State game. Despite the fact that warm apple cider, falling leaves and brisk air might not happen for a little while, watching College Football is one of my favorite ways to spend a Fall afternoon (even if it is hot as can be). Go Jackets!

Ballet Buns

After dancing for 13 years, I never wanted to see another bun again in my life. But lately I've been feeling inspired to give the ballet bun another go, although I'll be sure to leave out the hairspray, bobbie pins and hair net for a softer, less severe look.

There's just something so effortlessly pretty about a slightly undone bun worn high on the head.

Normally my "must read" list is about a mile long. But, after speeding through novel after novel over the past few months, I have reached the end of my list, and now unsure of what book to start next.

I prefer fiction, but wouldn't be opposed to a great biography or even some type of self-improvement book. However, Sci-Fi and vampire stories are definitely not my cup of tea. Perhaps I should read a classic like Gone With the Wind....

Here are some recommendations if you find yourself in a similar situation; stumped for some good literature.

White Spray Paint: I Love You

Kate over at Centsational Girl is always whipping up fabulous projects; many of which turn out beautifully but seem a little advanced for this gal. Although I wont be wainscotting my living room anytime soon, or completely redoing a staircase, I am constantly inspired by her ability to transform pieces of furniture and entire rooms.

One of her posts that I loved was this one. She found several brass items at the thrift store for mere dollars, gave them a good scrub, used a little white spray paint and ended up turning trash into treasure.

Amazing, right? Well Kate's obsession with white spray paint must be contagious because now I love the idea of painting over a piece that may not be quite right and revealing it's true potential.

Behold: the power of spray paint....

When I first spotted this little fella at T.J. Maxx for just $5.00, I knew he needed to come home with me so I could save him from his horrible life as a bronzy/brown creature.

Now, he's a gorgeous Snow Owl who lives on my bookshelf among novels, plants and other pretty things. I think he's much happier now... in fact, I think I see a smile. I knew white was his color all along.

So, that's the end of my short story about being inspired by an amazingly talented blogger and giving my new buddy a makeover. Now... for my next victim. What shall I spray paint next?

Mascara-Madness

Every now and then a stranger will compliment my eyelashes. I'm always surprised (and flattered of course), but due to the fact that my natural eyelashes are far from extraordinary, I must attribute it to the mascaras I use on a daily basis. (Mascaras. Yes, that wasn't a typo.)

It may seem a little ridiculous, but I use three separate products every single day, on my eyelashes alone. Excessive? Perhaps. But, I believe that spending just a little more time and effort to make the most out of average eyelashes, truly makes a difference.

Although there are several pricey brands out there that promise to triple your natural lashes, serums that boost hair growth, or eyelash extensions that cost a ton; I find the following three drug-store mascaras to be the best products out there to achieve thick, dark lashes.

I always start with L'Oreal's Voluminous first. The Carbon Black shade is dark as can be and really gives upper lashes much needed thickness.

Step two involves applying Mabyelline's Lash Stiletto to the bottom lashes only. The skinny brush is perfect for getting hard to reach corners and leaves bottom lashes long and clump free.

Lastly, I finish up with one more coat of mascara. This time, with Lash Blast by Cover Girl. It's the perfect final step to give eyelashes (top and bottom) just a bit more oomph and really lengthen like crazy while pumping up the volume.

So that's it. Easy right? Some assume that applying multiple coats of mascara results in a clumped up mess, but I find with a little practice and working quickly (don't let mascara dry between coats), it's possible to make eyelashes thicker, darker and more noticeable.
I don't personally choose to use an eyelash curler because I don't notice a major difference. But, on the rare occasion that I have a little extra time to my already extensive mascara routine, I start by using Shu Uemura's Eyelash Curler on bare lashes. Other curlers pale in comparison - this one is the best.

Street Style Inspiration: Army Green

One trend that I really like is this Army green military jacket.

When I came across the picture above, I immediately loved this look. Not only can the jacket be worn with jeans and flats, but it's even more amazing when worn over a pretty white dress.

Now, I'm determined to find a jacket that looks a bit worn, has a great fit, and provides just the right amount of warmth. I'm off to do some online research and hopefully will find some great options that be too expensive.
PS - What are your thoughts on white after Labor Day? Rules are meant to be broken.... right?

Hello hello and Happy Tuesday! I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend. I spent the last four days on the Eastern Shore of Maryland visiting my family...

Can you believe it's already September? Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but the air seemed just a bit more crisp today with Fall right around the corner. I always welcome the changing of seasons with anticipation, but the moment my tan fades, I instantly miss the warm days of Summer. During the next few weeks I'll be looking forward to cooler temperatures, yet enjoying the last few opportunities for poolside lounging.

On a completely separate note: Did anyone catch Part 1 of the New Jersey Housewives reunion show on Bravo? Within the first five minutes Teresa looses it and goes absolutely insane. I was really rather horrified at how worked up she got. If you didn't see it on Monday, here's a clip from Bravotv.com.

Toning Up

Some may find it hard to believe, but I actually enjoy working out. It feels great to end the day with some physical activity, increase the heart rate and work up a sweat. Sure there are times when I'd rather come home and collapse on the couch, or wallow in self pity after a rough day. But typically, a work out is just the thing to lift my spirits and provide a sense of accomplishment.

While I am no expert, I believe it's best to change up your workout routine to continue challenging your body and avoid getting burnt out. I try to mix up gym visits with Pilates classes, running outdoors when the weather is nice (although lately it's been way too hot!), and the occasional cycling or ab class.

So, given the fact that I'm all about trying new toning techniques, I was so excited to check out a brand new studio that opened yesterday here in Atlanta. Pure Barre uses a ballet barre mixed with resistance, ab work and stretching to "lift your seat, tone your thighs, and burn fat in record-breaking time." Since I took ballet classes for 15 years, I thought that this would be right up my ally.

Unfortunately I was rather disappointed. While the upbeat music was great, and the facility was impeccable, the 55 minute class was less than fabulous. The movements didn't seem to flow and there were several awkward transitions. On the plus side, the workout was pretty intense and I'll definitely feel the pliés tomorrow. However, I expected the teacher to give more direction regarding proper technique, especially because the studio was filled with beginners. And to top things off, classes were $25 each. Maybe I'm being cheap, but isn't that a little steep?

Seeing as how it was their grand opening, I'm sure there are kinks to work out. While I enjoyed trying Pure Barre, I don't believe I'll become a regular. For now, I plan on sticking with Pilates and possibly trying something new in the future. Perhaps a Fitness Bootcamp?

So what are your thoughts on toning up? Ever try a Pure Barre class? I'd love to know if you had a better experience!

Towards the end of Summer, I begin looking forward to Autumn. Crisp air, college football, and finally getting to wear my favorite boots and blazers are all things I find to be a refreshing change after long, hot summers.

Funny Face

I can't say I had the best Monday ever, but it sure did end nicely when I discovered the September J. Crew catalog in my mailbox. Always a lovely surprise!

Of course I was blown away by all the gorgeous clothing and ingenious styling, but that goes without saying. One thing that really caught my eye was the bright pink lipstick worn by models throughout.

Apparently the shade is called Funny Face by Nars, and is described as a "semi matte fuchsia".

I think it's necessary to step outside of one's comfort zone every now and then and I would love to give this look a try. However, I'm not quite sure if this not-so-subtle shade would look as pretty in person as it does on print. What do you think? Give bold fuchsia lips a try? Or leave it to models and stick to more neutral shades of lipstick?

Lazy Morning Oatmeal

I love waking up in the morning after a long night of sleep feeling rested and refreshed. It's such a nice treat to enjoy a peaceful morning, free from alarm clocks and the typical rush to get out the door and off to work.

One of my favorite lazy morning meals is warm oatmeal accompanied by a big mug of coffee. Growing up, I had only eaten instant oatmeal which I always found to be less than thrilling. It wasn't until I discovered this post by Simply Seleta that I decided to give oatmeal another try, and I've been a fan ever since.

Simply mix 2/3 cups of steel cut oats with 4 cups of water in a small Crockpot, set to low, and 8 hours later you will wake up to the most delicious and creamy oatmeal ever.

Next add brown sugar along with dried crandberries or fresh blueberries. Perfect for a lazy morning and even better during cold winter months... Enjoy!

Just a quick hello as I've been MIA this week. I always feel rather disorganized when I return home from a long trip followed by a busy weekend. Unpacking, laundry and work catch-up has been consuming me these days, leaving little time for posting.

Recently I decided it was time to re-arrange my apartment and take advantage of my spare bedroom. The goal is to make this space pretty and fresh, yet functional as an office/craft room/den.

Ideally, I would purchase the Overlapping-Squares Daybed from West Elm which has me absolutely smitten. I especially love it in this sun room on Young House Love.

But, unfortunately at this time I don't have an extra $959 bones to spare. So I started thinking about a more budget-friendly solution and remembered seeing this lovely day-bed made from shipping pallets.

Well I'm back from my trip to Key West and feeling tired, overwhelmed, but thankfully nice and tan. Despite having a miserable time trying to fly out of Atlanta Wednesday night, we finally made it into Miami at 3:00 am (5 hrs. after we were supposed to land), stayed in a hotel (free thanks to Delta), and headed on to Key West the next morning. The start of our vacation definitely was not ideal, but once we finally arrived, the rest of the trip was absolutely fabulous.

We lounged by the pool at our cottage, took walks to the coffee shop, stopped by touristy shops on Duval Street, and chartered a boat for a day. Of course we spent some time enjoying the night life as well which included attending my first drag show (interesting to say the least, but very entertaining), and experiencing my first and probably last nude bar (FYI no nudity participation among myself or my friends).

The whole getaway was even better than I had imagined and I loved my first time down to the Keys. It was such a nice chance to catch up with friends and spend some quality time drinking together, laughing together and making memories.

Infomercial Weakness

So... I have a confession to make. I'm rather embarrassed to admit it, but I am a sucker for advertisements and infomercials.

I start out watching an advertisement for a silly gadget, always finding it extremely amusing how they manage to make the simplest task seem so frustrating (ever see the one for a hands free hairdryer? It's really quite humorous.) Then, after mere minutes of laughing at the ridiculousness, I suddenly start wondering if perhaps this product really could change my life. Maybe I do need a Shark Steam Cleaner to make my floor shine. Or perhaps the GT Express is just the thing for quick, delicious, easy meals in only seven minutes...

Normally I don't actually order what's being advertised, but there have been a few instances where I'm so convinced, I simply must purchase the product to find out for myself. Especially when it involves beauty products, hair accessories, and makeup.

Yesterday is a prime example. I went to Target for a few toiletries and came across the Spin Pin by Goodie. Although I rarely wear my hair in a traditional bun, I remembered the advertisement and decided to purchase a set. Surprisingly enough I was thoroughly impressed. The spiral shaped hair tool really does hold a bun in place. Incredible!

Here are some other "as-seen-on-tv" items that I've been purchased and found to be great products.

Strap Perfect: Really does hold your bra perfectly in place. I've come to rely on it when wearing racer back tanks during the summer months.

Ped Egg: As gross as the commercial is, the Ped Egg is great for sluffing off dead skin from dry heels and perfect for use between pedicures.

Proactiv: Wont cure acne overnight, but definitely a wonderful skincare line that I've used off and on since I was a teenager. The Refining Mask is especially great to dry out the occasional pimple.

And one last confession. I am guilty of purchasing the Bump-It.

Yes, that's right. Embarassing, I know. The idea of having "big, sexy hair" seemed interesting a few years back, although I never actually wore it in public. Fine hair doesn't cover the plastic too well, but I figure I'll hang on to it for my next Jersey Shore party.

I have not, however, purchased a Snuggie, but it seems everyone else in the world has. I have a friend who loves them! Anyway, I feel better now that I've admitted my ridiculous behavior.

So tell me.. what do you think of infomercials? Ridiculous and dumb? Or are you intrigued by genius inventions? Any great products I'm missing?

Swimsuit Search

This past weekend, I went to the mall on a mission to find a great swimsuit and unfortunately failed miserably. Although there were tons of sales (normally a good thing), the selection was poor and the inventory was picked over. Finding a matching top and bottom in the same sized seemed practically impossible, and overall I was disappointed with the styles.

Although it wont arrive before my trip to the Florida Keys on Wednesday, it seems ordering a bikini online might be my best option. Here are some of my favorites.

MoroccanOil Love

I heard about the Moroccan Oil craze a while ago, but initially assumed it wasn't for me. The idea of adding oil to my fine hair seemed like a bad idea, which would inevitably leave me with a greasy, weighed down mess.

But then, my wonderful hairdresser used this product on me during my last appointment and once was enough for me to become a believer. The articles and reviews I had read were correct afterall. Using just a bit on damp hair (concentrating on the ends and avoiding the root) and a quick blow dry later; the end result is shiny, glossy hair that doesn't feel heavy or dirty in any way. So obviously I purchased a bottle (the small one to be economical of course) and I've enjoyed using this product ever since.

- There's now a light version for individuals with fair hair. May need to give this version a try next -

Typically, one would assume oil is for individuals with thick, coarse hair in desperate need of some smoothness. However, this stuff works well for any hair type and smells great too.

If you haven't yet discovered the wonder of Moroccan Oil, you should definitely give it a try. I think you'll be as impressed as I was.

Another Day at the Office

Growing up, I had a strange fascination with office supplies. There was nothing better than a trip to Office Max for a set of highlighters, fresh notebooks or a stack of colorful Post-Its. I even had a desk set up in our basement complete with an old-fashioned typewriter, where I managed to amuse myself for hours on end playing Secretary (I now realize how incredibly lame I once was).

Well now that I'm all grown up, working at a large corporation (though not as a Secretary), I get to experience the office setting every single day (ugh) and unfortunately no longer consider it appealing. In fact, spending an insane amount of time in an area with zero aesthetic charm, fluorescent lighting and no natural sunshine can be downright depressing.

So, to liven up a typical office, I found some lovely little items -- perfect for adding cheerful elements to even the most bland workspace.

Just a few pretty touches could really make an impact in an otherwise sterile environment. I'm loving Johnathan Adler's line of desk accessories and those pencil cups would be such an easy DIY.

Cocktails in the Garden

Each Thursday night during the summer months, Atlanta Botanical Gardens does a "Cocktails in the Garden" event from 6:00-10:00 pm. Last week's featured guest was Emily Giffin, one of my all time favorite chick-lit authors. I've mentioned before how much I love her books (here), so I jumped at the opportunity to meet her in person by attending her book signing with some good friends who happen to be fans as well.

The event was so much fun and I absolutely loved meeting Emily Giffin. Not only is she an incredible writer, she is such a sweet woman who was so gracious and down to earth. She made a point to chat with each person in line and patiently took pictures with all her fans. Although it was ridiculously hot and buggy, she seemed genuinely happy to be meeting her readers.

And on a similar note, Something Borrowed (Giffin's first novel) is currently being filmed and will be out in theaters sometime next year.

The movie will star Ginnifer Goodwin as Rachel who seems perfect for this role

and Colin Egglesfeld as ~~eye candy~~ Dex. How gorgeous is this man?

Although I've been let down by the movie version of books several times before (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Marley and Me, Time Traveler's Wife, etc.), I have high hopes for Something Borrowed. I already know I like the cast, and I'm so excited to see it in theaters!

I love jeans and I like leggings, so it would only make sense to be all over this trend. After trying on several pairs, I was not in love. Perhaps the I didn't find the right wash, or maybe I just need to get used to thin, skin tight denim. For now I'll stick to my favorite J Brand skinny jeans, but will continue to look at other Jean Leggings in hopes of finding the perfect pair.

Lemon Blossoms

For some reason, when working out on the treadmill or elliptical, I enjoy watching the food network. It may seem odd that I watch my favorite chefs whip up delicious treats, while I'm working my booty off doing cardio. I'm not sure there's a logical explanation for this... but perhaps subconsciously it makes me work harder knowing that the more I exercise, the less guilty I'll feel about indulging in rich meals and decadent desserts.

During one of my recent afternoon workouts, I saw Paul Deen (love her) make the easiest little Lemon Blossoms. The recipe looked like a cinch, so I immediately made a mental note to look up the recipe (here) and recreate the lovely lemon dessert.

And I must say, they were just as tasty as I had imagined. The lemon flavored glaze is amazing and the inside is moist and delicious. They will last for several days (stored in an airtight container) and the best part: other than lemons, instant pudding and cake mix, most of the ingredients are basic baking ingredients you probably have on hand.

They may not be the most attractive baked good, but they sure are tasty. If you end up trying this recipe, please let me know what you think!

After not shopping for the month of June, I had plenty of time to really assess my closet and determine what I've got enough of (black heels and Havaiana flip flops), what I'm over (cheap worn out pumps), and what I'm in dire need of. I'm back from my trip out east and while happy to be home, it's always a little sad when my visit ends. The weather was beautiful, but HOT - in the triple digits some days. So, we tried to stay cool at the country club pool and spent one fabulous day on the river. We also played croquet, badminton and horseshoes in the backyard, watched fireworks from the porch, indulged in some delicious Maryland crabs, took long walks, and explored the cute antique stores and boutiques in town.

I am very proud to announce that I have successfully completed my personal challenge! Surprisingly enough I survived 30 whole days without buying clothing, shoes, jewelry or accessories and I could not be more pleased.

The whole Shopping Moratorium idea began back in May when I realized that shopping had become not only a hobby, but a habit as well. Despite having a closet full of clothes, jewelry pouring out of my accessory drawer and more shoes than I know what to do with, I continued feeling like I had nothing to wear. Instead of getting creative and searching through my own closet to find that perfect outfit, I would immediately run to Nordstrom, H&M, JCrew, etc. I began overlooking the great pieces I already own, just to have an excuse to buy something new. Given the fact that I do not have an unlimited budget, nor a massive closet, going cold turkey for a month seemed to be the only solution to make myself change my attitude about shopping.

Now I have proven to myself that I am capable of walking away from a great sale empty handed, and have enough will power to tell myself "no". This challenge has made me appreciate what I own and re-discover things in my closet I had previously forgotten about. Moving forward, I hope to shop less, get rid of things I don't wear, and buy only items I absolutely love and will continue loving for years to come. Purchasing a great dress, fabulous necklace, or killer shoes should be a well thought-out investment, rather than a brash decision driven by closet boredom.

I initially thought this month-long shopping cleanse would be incredibly difficult, but instead it was rather easy. This self-imposed challenge was a great opportunity to re-evaluate and I definitely encourage others to try going on a one-month cleanse of whatever you need a break from.

Yesterday as I was running down Peachtree street, I noticed a very pleasant surprise. CB2 is coming to Atlanta and will be located in the 1010 Midtown building. Although West Elm is my favorite store for home decor, CB2 is a close second with their modern and sleek designs.

The new store will be opening in August. But in the mean time, here are some CB2 products I've got my eye on. Can't wait to see these lovely items in person.

Do you ever have those mornings that start off crappy, even before you roll out of bed? Well today was one of those days for me. I awoke with a horrible dream fresh in my mind (you know.. the kind that seems so realistic you wake up with a sad heart) immediately followed by a phone call from my parents who were full of unnecessary advice. Of course they meant well, but something about the discussion made my already sour mood ten times worse.

Seeing as how it's Friday, and my day off from work, I was determined not to let a bad start ruin my whole day.

This past weekend, I noticed my friend wearing the cutest little leather bracelets. Her boyfriend had bought them for her in Venice for about 1 Euro each (what a deal). Unfortunately I have no trips to Italy planned anytime soon, but still love this look and was thrilled to find similar styles on Shopbop. Although they are much pricier (anywhere from $54 - $80), Gorjana's leather bracelets come in so many variations, I don't know how you could choose just one.

Adventure to EAV

One of the things I love about Atlanta is the diverse neighborhoods all located within 285. Whether hanging out in Little Five Points searching for vintage treasures, spending a Saturday browsing through the cutesy boutiques in Virginia Highlands, or exploring the upcoming area of West Midtown (chalked full of design resources) there’s never a shortage of unique places to visit.

When the boy and I are planning a date night, we tend to make an effort not to frequent the same locations time and time again. Instead, we make every attempt possible to discover great restaurants all over the city. So yesterday, we ventured to East Atlanta Village; an area I had never been during my seven years of living here.

We ate at Flat Iron Grill which is basically a pub; walls covered with pictures of tattoos, red bulbs in the light fixtures, and a bathroom too nasty for words. Although it wasn’t my typical scene (and the menu was nothing to write home about), we had a very enjoyable time eating greasy food, drinking a pitcher of 420 and taking it all in.

At the end of the evening, I left smelling like a bar, yet completely inspired by the edgy vibe of the neighborhood and it’s eclectic style.

Whether in your own home town, or a brand new city - never stop exploring and discovering new places.

Yesterday was June 15th (thank you Captain Obvious), meaning I am exactly half way through my month of not shopping. So far, I am very impressed with my ability to stay away from stores and surprisngly haven't even had the urge to partake in retail therapy. So to reward myself, I decided to buy one of my very favorite movies.

I adore this movie not only because it's shot beautifully, or because Zoey Deschanel has the best style ever (total girl crush), but because the story is relatable. Most romantic comedies involve two people meeting, sparks fly, love blossoms, and we all live happily ever after. So predictable. This story is much more true to life with a dose of harsh reality while being completely and absolutely charming throughout.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

This past weekend I finally had the opportunity to sit down and finish reading the international bestseller, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I’m slightly ashamed to admit it took me a month and a half to finish reading this novel, which I believe is due to the difficulty I had with the many characters and story lines introduced in the beginning of the book. At first, I did not have a sense of urgency to pick up the book and continue reading. However, the plots comes together in the second half resulting in an extremely suspenseful ending.

The story takes place in Sweden where Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is convicted of libel after writing an article for Millennium magazine, accusing a powerful industrialist of being a corrupt criminal involved in fraud and other business related crimes. Instead of fighting the trial’s outcome, Blomkvist instead leaves his position at Millennium only to take on an assignment for Henrik Vanger; a wealthy gentleman who is determined to solve the mystery of his niece’s disappearance which has been haunting him for nearly 36 years. Upon successfully completing this assignment, Vanger promises to reveal secrets to Blomkvist that will clear his name as a financial journalist, backing up his article which had previously ruined his professional reputation. With the help of a genius computer hacker yet incredibly troubled young woman, Lisbeth Salander, Blomkvist embarks on a journey uncovering dark secrets within the Vanger family history that not only explain the disappearance of the Vanger heiress, but are responsible for other crimes left unsolved throughout the years.

Although it a bit challenging at first, Larsson’s carefully crafted thriller involving brilliant characters on the search for answers and revenge, is absolutely fascinating. A must read for everyone!

Bethenny Getting Married

I've been excited for the premiere of Bethenny Getting Married for quite some time now. However, this week I've been a little out of it as I've had my mind on a couple different things (reality tv not being one of them). Therefore, I managed to completely overlook the fact that Bethenny Frankel's new show started last night. Not only did I completely miss it, I didn't even set my DVR.

Good thing Bravo plays reruns like crazy! I'm planning on tuning in tonight at 9:00 pm to watch one of my very favorite housewives begin her journey as an expecting mother and bride to be. Lame to spend Friday night watching tv? Possibly. But tonight, it sounds like the perfect ending to a crazy and rather hectic week.

As I've mentioned before, the month of June = no shopping for this girl. So of course, last Monday (May 31st) I had to take advantage of my last shopping opportunity before going cold turkey for 30 straight days.

While enjoying my last day exploring the wonderful work of retail, a cute window display at American Eagle caught my eye and I decided to take a look. Although hesitant at first, (I hadn't shopped at AE in years - probably since high school) I was pleasantly surprised by their selection of great basics, summery dresses and fun tops. All more sophisticated than I would have expected and it looks like they've eased up on the graphic tees and logos on everything.

I walked out with these three pieces (two out of three on sale - yay!) which I'm excited to incorporate into my wardrobe and wear during my anti-shopping month.

So I left Florida with a tan. Mission accomplished! Yet bronzed skin is just so not cute when covered in bug bites. I've always known I'm incredibly sweet and apparently the sandflies agreed. Those blood sucking little creatures chose to feast on my skin, resulting in itchy red bumps all over my legs. After trying everything (oatmeal soak, ointments, etc.), my legs still look like I've got a bad case of adult chicken pox. Not exactly attractive.

I think it's just a matter of time before the redness is gone and the itch subsides. But until then, my legs will remain covered. I have chosen to wear pants all week (which has gotten boring and hot in 90 degree weather). So now, I'm dying to slip into something feminine and flowy with full leg coverage. The solution? I'm back from West Palm Beach and finally feeling rested and back to normal. Yesterday I somehow managed to get through the day, but felt exhausted, dazed and just 'out of it'. I blame it on my 7am flight Monday morning while surviving on very little sleep.

Although the trip was far from the low-key, I had a great weekend spent soaking in the gorgeous Florida sunshine during the day, and staying up late at night with good friends visiting by the pool and reminiscing about college memories.

The wedding was definitely the highlight of the weekend. The ceremony was short, but lovely and the reception was so much fun! The bride was absolutely stunning, the groom was grinning ear to ear, and the couple looked more in love than ever. It was definitely a weekend I'll always remember.

June Challenge: Shopping Moratorium

As a single young woman working 40+ hours per week with very few financial obligations and no children, I am fortunate to have a decent amount of disposable income. After paying my monthly rent (which is very reasonable), utility bills, and other basic living expenses, I am left with a portion that gets put away into savings, and the rest is considered "fun money".

Due to the fact that I absolutely adore shopping, I tend to blow through this fun money rather quickly. I consider browsing a hobby and even when entering a store "just to look", great deals always find a way of sucking me in. Who can say no to a bargain?

I do not consider this habit to be a problem, but I do tend to impulse buy resulting in unnecessary purchases that I really don't have space for thanks to a tiny closet. So, in an effort to save my fun money for larger purchases (going for quality over quantity here), I am challenging myself to buy nothing that falls under the following categories during the month of June: clothes, shoes, jewelry, accessories.

This is going to be difficult and I might experience withdrawal (30 days is a long time!), but I am confident that with a little willpower and self discipline, I will be successful. So, in exactly one week, the challenge begins. Wish me luck (I'll need it)!

Birthday Celebration

This past weekend was my roommate's birthday. To celebrate, we hosted a party at our apartment. It was thrown together rather quickly, but we had a great turnout and I believe everyone had a good time. It did get me thinking though...when does a party go from involving a keg, solo cups, rummy bears and drinking games to a mature social gathering complete with good wine and fancy appetizers? Is it acceptable for guests to do keg stands post-college? Will people be taking jello shots in their 30's?

It seems at this point cookie cakes and hunch punch are just fine, however I do love the idea of having a sophisticated soiree with every detail perfectly planned. Anyway, just some things I've been pondering...

Avenue Q is here in Atlanta and I've finally rallied a group of girlfriends to go see it this Thursday!

I am so excited to see this hysterical Sesame Street inspired musical. With songs titled "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", "The Internet is for Porn" and full puppet nudity, it's definitely not appropriate for kids, but sure to be entertaining.

All the reviews I've read have been extremely positive, but if you've seen this musical, I'd love to know what you thought!

I do not consider my full time career to be an absolute dream job. There are several things I'd like to change, but I do feel very fortunate to be gainfully employed during these tough economic times.

While there are positives and negatives to every job, one of the major benefits to my current position is that I get every other Friday off. It is most definitely worth working longer hours in order to enjoy having three day weekends twice a month. Whether my "off Friday" is spent out and about running errands, cleaning my apartment, or relaxing by the pool, I truly cherish and value having the whole day to call my own.

Lately it has become somewhat of a ritual to start my day off by walking down to my favorite cafe for a red velvet cupcake and an iced coffee. There's nothing better than a delicious treat to make my Fridays just a little sweeter.

Dining Solo

The idea of eating alone has always made me completely uncomfortable. Sure I eat meals by myself quite frequently in the privacy of my own home. But the thought of arriving at restaurant, saying "table for one please", and dining solo seems so lonely.

When alone on work travel, I typically avoid the awkward restaurant experience all together by ordering room service, or getting takeout. Even when sitting in a cafe, I always make sure to have my iPhone, a book, or magazine to accompany me while sipping a piping hot latte.

I recently came across a very well written article On Eating Alone by Suzanne Lenzer who puts a new perspective on dining in solitude. She explains that humans naturally associate food with social situations as we've grown up sharing meals with friends, partners and family members. Once past the initial awkwardness, Lenzer now considers eating alone as an empowering experience, allowing us the opportunity to nourish both our minds and bodies without chatter or distractions.

Perhaps someday I too will confidently enter a restaurant and consider it a treat to dine independently. After reading this article, the thought of sitting alone and enjoying a delicious meal, while focusing only on the rich flavors and my own thoughts sounds like a rather pleasant experience.

Unfortunately my day has been anything but relaxing as I prepare for a work function taking place this evening. I have been working my little booty off coordinating this event and can't wait for a little down time.

Thank goodness the week is down hill after today :)

If you love Chick-Lit and are not familiar with Emily Giffin, I highly recommend reading her fabulous novels. She has a way of writing stories that will have you hooked after the first chapter and truly feel a connection with the relatable characters she creates.

I always find myself speeding through her stories, unable to put them down. They are quick, entertaining novels, perfect for some summer reading.

The 5th and newest book written by this very talented author will be released TODAY! I am currently in the beginning of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but this will definitely be next on my list.
